Title

From the library to the chalkface: a paradigm shift in managing learning materials

Abstract

The sophistication and maturity of the constituent systems making up an enterprise-level Educational Technology infrastructure have improved continuously over the last decade. Each of the systems, from Learning Management System to Student Management System to Learning Content Management Systems and so on, now effectively achieve their specific domain functions. Moreover, integrations between these systems have also improved greatly in parallel with better standards-based specifications such as SCORM, OAI, SIF, etc. However, management of content and specifically learning materials in use across the different learning and teaching systems has lagged behind other achievements in our industry. There is, at last, a shifting paradigm in this area.

This presentation explores developments with inter- and intra system content management and in particular new developments in federated content flowing throughout the learning and teaching systems from upstream repositories. This includes capabilities with respect to content localisation, aggregation and reuse as well as intact digital rights. It also exhibits how this can be achieved without removing the content from the upstream repositories wherein it is managed and refreshed by its owners.

It includes worked examples from significant, flexible and online learning initiatives in the Australian education industry stretching from state-wide government programs to key commercial providers and covers examples in the K-12, vocational and higher education domains.
